8 Ways to create an empowering morning routine

The morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. Ask any wellness expert their secret to a happy and healthy life; most of them will stress the importance of creating a morning routine. This will help you change the course of your entire day. You will have more energy, less stress and anxiety, more positivity, a higher self-esteem, better self-control and more mental clarity. We know your sleep is precious to you but getting up a half an hour earlier to focus on yourself will make such a world of difference.
 

1. Hydrate

Most of us wake up dehydrated leaving you with decreased energy levels. One of the easiest things you can do to improve your morning is keep a glass of water by your bed for when you wake up. Your body is detoxifying while you sleep so it is important to drink plenty of water from the moment you wake up to rehydrate and flush out toxins. Adding lemon to your water stimulates digestion, supports liver function, alkalizes your body, boosts immunity and it’s oh-so refreshing.
 

2. Take a moment

Before your mind is flooded with tasks to do throughout the day- take at least 5 minutes to quiet your mind and center yourself. Focus on your breathe and be aware of the present moment. Be patient with yourself! Keep your mind from drifting from one thought to the next is difficult. The important thing is to stick with it, focus on your breath and just try to be aware of the present moment.
 

3. “I am awesome!”

Start your day with a positive affirmation! This is one of the most powerful things you can do to set the wheels in motion for the day. Create a daily mantra for yourself. While you’re getting ready- take a moment, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself something empowering like: “I am confident and can handle whatever today throws my way”, “I have unique strengths that no one else can offer” or “I look and feel damn good today!”
 

4. Intentions

The morning is an optimal time to set your intentions for the day. Your mind is clear so taking the time to brainstorm goals and intentions is very effective. Write down new intentions, review old ideas or visualize your goals; use this sacred morning time to focus on the ideal life and how to manifest it.
 

5. Ask yourself one great question

Your brain is a fine piece of machinery and it loves to be put to work. Steer your brain in the right direction by asking it a an empowering question like “How can I be my happiest self?” or “What am I grateful for?” You will get creative and inspiring answers and you may even surprise yourself in the process.
 

6. Wake up grateful

Take a few minutes to appreciate your life and focus on what you have been blessed with today. Keep a gratitude journal is a powerful reinforcement tool and studies show there is a range of mental health benefits that come from recording positive events.
 

7. Get moving

A long run or an invigorating yoga sequence can release two happy chemicals, serotonin and dopamine which trigger feelings of well being and happiness! This will also get your blood flowing, release stiffness and fuels you with clean energy.
 

8. Don’t skip breakfast!

Breakfast sets the tone for your body’s digestion and metabolism. Keep your fridge stocked with fresh, organic cold-pressed juices and foods. This is a way to ensure you will always have a healthy grab-and-go breakfast!
 

Keep it simple and have fun with it. Find a routine that speaks to you- one that focuses you, motivates you and puts you in the right state of mind. Above all, listen to your body. 5 Ways to Use Leftover Juice Pulp

Cold pressed juicing is an amazing process that extracts liquids from the pulp of fruits and vegetables leaving you with nutrient and vitamin dense juice. Your body benefits because you can easily assimilate the juice right into your bloodstream without having to digest it. During this process, the pulp of the fruits and vegetables becomes dried out from the constant pressing and we have often found that juice shops are throwing it away! So what are you supposed to do with it? Here are our 5 favorite ways to make good use of leftover juice pulp.
 
1. Composting

At MJF, we are left with a lot of excess pulp so we donate it to local community gardens. The fibrous pulp breaks down quickly and infuses compost with a wide range of valuable nutrients. The compost can then be added to gardens for healthier soil and high-yielding plants. If you don’t have a compost of your own, you can reach out to local community gardens and donate your remaining pulp to them.
 
2. Smoothies

Leftover pulp is a great way to bulk up your smoothies with healthy fiber. High-fiber, superfood smoothies are important for optimal overall health. They support the digestive system, satisfy hunger, provide sustainable energy and help balance blood sugar.
 
3. Baking

Juice pulp is a great ingredient to have handy in your kitchen. It can add fiber, flavor and pizazz to almost any meal. Toss some veggie pulp into an omelet. Add a little to quinoa bowls or veggie burgers. Enhance your soups and sauces with it. Fruit pulp is amazing in pancakes, muffins or other baked goods. You can even make your own slaw with carrot, celery and beet pulp.
 
4. Pulp Chips

Looking for a satisfying and guilt-free snack? Something crunchy and a little salty maybe? Take your juice pulp, mix in some our your favorite spices, superfood seeds (chia, flax, pumpkin), a little H2O depending on how dry your pulp is and bake them on low heat for about an hour.
 
5. Face Scrubs

Ever wonder how natural your “all-natural” face mask is? The answer is probably not so much. Forget the department store counter: make your own! Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that soften, tone, exfoliate your skin and leave you glowing. Pulp scrubs can help with inflammation, acne, puffiness, age spots, dark circles and dry patches. One “healthy” sweetener to avoid

Everyone knows that sugar is unhealthy and most health conscious people are trying to limit or avoid it. All sorts of other sweetener options have become popular and one of those is called agave nectar. It is derived from a plant, found in various “health foods” and is claimed to be low-glycemic and diabetic-friendly.
 
Sounds pretty good, right? Not totally- after some research and consulting with a few nutrition experts, we found agave is not only worse than plain sugar but is basically high-fructose corn syrup (!) masquerading as a healthy alternative.
 
All sugar- from table sugar to HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) to honey- contains some mixture of fructose and glucose. Table sugar is 50/50, HFCS is 55/45. Agave nectar is a whopping 90% fructose, almost- but not quite- twice as high as HFCS.
 
Fructose, the sugar found naturally in fruit, is perfectly fine when you get it from whole foods like apples (about 7% fructose), because it comes with a host of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. But when it’s commercially extracted from fruit, concentrated and made into a sweetener, it exacts a considerable metabolic price.
 
In the agave plant, most of the sweetness comes from a particular kind of fructose called inulin that actually has some health benefits and is considered a fiber. But there’s not much inulin left in the actual syrup. In the manufacturing process, enzymes are added to the inulin to break it down into digestible sugar (fructose), resulting in a syrup that has a fructose content that can be as high as 90%. This resulting product is a really sweet syrup that interferes with a healthy metabolism and can throw your whole system off resulting in acne, increased weight gain around your middle or, even worse, diabetes and heart disease.
 
Agave is almost all fructose- a highly processed sugar with great marketing. True, it has a low-glycemic index, but so does arsenic- that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you.
 
If you want to have agave in small doses it won’t kill you. Although, if you are trying to be mindful of your health, especially when making your favorite plant-based recipe, superfood smoothie or with your morning tea- then consider these MJF approved alternatives.

5 Best Natural Sweeteners

At MJF, we are pretty sweet on life. However, there is one thing that we are not so down on: agave. Agave nectar/ syrup is basically high-fructose corn syrup masquerading as a health food. What do we mean by this? Most agave is highly processed and therefore becomes simply a syrup with anywhere from 55% to 90% fructose. This actually makes it way higher in fructose than high-fructose corn syrup. Excessive fructose creates gut problems, contributes to acne and breakouts, raises blood pressure, causes weight gain and- most severely- can trigger diabetes or heart disease. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and are not down with chemicals, preservatives or the weird stuff: no worries, we got you. Try one of these 5 MJF-approved “clean” sugar alternatives:
 

1. Dates: These dried fruits are not only really delicious but they contain an array of antioxidants, trace minerals and both soluble and insoluble fiber- great for weight loss and sustained energy. Two or three medium size dates in a smoothie will be more than enough to sweeten even the greenest blend.

 

2. Coconut Nectar: A clean alternative to sugar, this is also the single most sustainable sweetener in the world. Not only is it good for the environment, it also has a variety of positive effects on the body. Coconut nectar can alleviate anxiety, increase heart health and decrease your waistline due to the fact is high in naturally forming electrolytes and life-buildling essential amino acids.

 

3. Coconut Palm Sugar: Coconuts are one of the most miraculous foods and the benefits of them just keep coming. This sweetener is made from dried and crystalized sap from the coconut tree. You use it just as you would normally use sugar, it is a perfect 1:1 ratio. It has a wonderfully rich, caramel flavor and is gentler on blood sugar than regular sugar. You also get a shot of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients!

 

4. Maple Syrup: Good for more than just waffles! This all-natural sweetener comes right from the maple tree and is free from any coloring or additives. It is also high in zinc, calcium and the all-important mineral manganese, which plays an important role in energy production and antioxidant defenses. Pure maple syrup will not spike blood sugar and is a safe alternative for those with metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Just make sure when you’re shopping you get Grade B which is darker and more nutrient dense than Grade A.

 

5. Raw Honey: One of Earth’s most amazing gifts: raw, unfiltered honey is high in enzymes, has a great trace mineral content and phenomenal healing compounds like proopolis. Look for the “wild” versions- the cheaper, heated or treated versions kill off the live enzymes, can contain illegal additives and may sneakily add in high fructose corn syrup. 1 tablespoon can sweeten any recipe, help fend off seasonal allergies and is gentle on blood sugar levels. Bonus: by buying local wild honey you can support your local beekeeper and save our essential but dwindling bee population.

10 Tips for a Healthier Work Day

The average American spends 1/3 of their day at work. I’m no math whiz, but that seems to add up! Workplaces can be filled with a lot of pressure, stress, sugary afternoon fixes and way to much glued to a chair. We are here to tell you that it is possible to have an office job and still live a healthy lifestyle. It takes a little adjusting and incorporating smart and health decisions into your day. You will find if you follow these 10 simple tips you will feel more energized, productive, creative and happier at work.

1. Don’t pass on breakfast

A healthy day at the office starts before you even leave your house. First thing in the morning, even before that first cup of coffee, drink a tall glass of lemon water. It will kickstart your day by jumpstarting digestion and hydrating and detoxifying your body. Next step, breakfast. Your mornings set the stage for the rest of your day. Starting off with a healthy breakfast will give you the boost of energy you need to get you going and keeping you going through the first half of the day. Starting your day with healthy choices motivates you to continue making smart decisions the rest of the day.

2. Get moving

Get creative with this! Have a phone call you need to make? Make it on the go. Instead of shooting an email to someone in the office, get up and go get some old fashioned ‘facetime’. Make elevators and escalators something to be avoided like the plague. Taking the stairs will do wonders for your health, not to mention your gluts! Have a one-on-one meeting with someone? Suggest a walk and talk. Invest in a fit band and track your steps each day. Nothing like a little self-competition to keep you motivated. Anytime you can get out of the office and outside, do it. Don’t underestimate what fresh air and mother nature can do for you and your state of mind.

3. Opt for a light lunch

When eating lunch out, stay clear of heavy foods that are going to weight you down and make the rest of your afternoon feel like an uphill marathon. Pass on the bread basket, as tempting as it may be, creamy dishes and anything fried. Salads, plant-based meals, lean protein and light soups make excellent choices. Whenever possible bring a healthy lunch from home. That way you can control what you eat, how much you eat and save a lot of money.

Also avoid working through lunches. Take a proper lunch break, you deserve. Even if it’s just 15 minutes, take your gaze off your computer, put down your phone and take a moment to enjoy the meal that’s in front of you. You will feel fuller, more energized and more satisfied.

4. Keep a healthy snack stash

As 3pm rolls around avoid the unhealthy office snacks and by all means the vending machine. They may seem like the perfect fix to keep you going, but really they are just empty energy that will most certainly lead to a crash and having you feeling worse off. Keep a stash of healthy snack foods readily available: veggie sticks and hummus, fresh fruit, nut butter, homemade trail mix and 85% organic dark chocolate for those days that just won’t seem to end. Having these to fall back on will make passing up on birthday cupcakes and walking by the rows of temptation in the vending machine a lot easier.

5. Drink up

What kind of health post would this be if we didn’t remind you that you need to be drinking more water? Dehydration leads to sluggishness, aches and pains and brain fog. We often confuse hunger for dehydration as well. Drinking more water throughout your day will give you energy, clarity, keep you fuller and subside your coffee and sugar cravings. So before you reach for that 3rd or is it the 4th cup of coffee or that sugary toxic soda- go for a tall glass of water instead. Infuse your H2O with some lemon, lime or cucumber slices to liven it up.

7. Get Up

While you might not be able to take constant breaks to walk around the office, you can certainly get up every 30 minutes or so and just stretch, touch your toes and shake it out. Stand up whenever possible. Incase you haven’t heard, sitting is the new smoking. Too much sitting increases inflammation, insulin resistance, and weight gain. Sitting for more than 6 hours a day can increase blood pressure, as well as up your risk of diabetes, obesity, depression and certain types of cancer. The average American logs 9.5 hours of sitting daily. So will the real Slim Shady please stand up!

(I’m practicing what I preach and just stood up for a little stretch. Take a moment to do the same.)

8. Make your space a sanctuary

Make your office, cubicle, whatever your workspace is, a place you enjoy. I understand that there is only so much you can do with a limited amount of space, but the first step is to declutter and organize. Keep your space simple and in order. Now bring in some life and personality. Get yourself a plant. It will improve air quality, provide more oxygen and enhance creativity. Decorate your space with photos of loved ones, pets, quotes, affirmations- whatever floats your boat. They will help keep you calm, feel grounded and how can you not help but smile at the photo of your pooch rolling around in your bed.

9. Seated Stretches

So when you’re not walking around the office, or taking your standing break and you’re forced to be seated in a chair, there are still ways to be healthy about it: seated cat-cows. Plant both feet flat on the ground and place your hands on your thighs. As you inhale arch your back and look up toward the ceiling. Keep your shoulders pushed down and away from your ears. When you exhale, round your spine, sink your stomach in and let you head drop forward. Repeat this stretch 5-10 times. This will help you breathe oxygen into all parts of your back and torso, and improve your posture.

10. Say Om

That’s right a little midday meditation. Raised cortisol levels aren’t doing anyone any good. So if you are feeling overwhelming, stressed or lacking a little inspiration, take a moment to yourself. Place your hand on your stomach so you can feel your breath as it expands and contracts within you. Try a simple 4-7-8 breathing technique. We have found having an office mantra can really help on stressful days as well. Don’t underestimate the power of words. Create a mantra that is meaningful and empowering to you and repeat it to yourself as you practice your breathing techniques. An old standby I like to use is: I am abundant. I am enough. I have all that I need.
