Juice cleanses, whether they are one day or a week long, are a great way to hit the reset button on your entire body. There are simple ways to detox on a daily basis though. It is these small consistent changes that really make a big impact and keep your system running at an optimal level.
1. Oil Pulling
If you are not familiar with oil pulling – it is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of swishing oil around in your mouth to help extract toxins and bacteria. First thing in the morning, put a spoonful of oil (coconut is our preferred option, but you can use other variations such as sesame or olive oil) in your mouth and swish it around. You can start with 5 minutes and work your way up to 20. Afterwards, spit it out in the trash. Not only does this technique detox your mouth, but it removes plague, freshens breath and even whitens teeth.
2. Scrape Your Tongue
Tongue scraping is another Ayurvedic practice that will help remove bacteria, toxins and dead skin cells from your tongue. This build up can weaken digestion and liver functioning. After oil pulling use a tongue scraper to reach as far back as possible to pull off the film on your tongue. Trust us – it is very satisfying.
3. Lemon Water
After you’ve made your mouth so fresh and so clean clean, it’s time to energize the body, stimulate digestion and alkalize the system. A glass of lemon water will take care of all this and so much more. This may be the simplest, yet most effective way to improve your overall health. You can add a pinch of cayenne to rev up your metabolism, or a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar to increase the detoxifying benefits.
4. Dry Brush
The practice of dry skin brushing stimulates the lymphatic and circulatory systems, helping to speed up the elimination of metabolic waste. It also exfoliates the skin which removes dead skin cells and opens up your pores, allowing the release of toxins. Before you shower, gently brush your skin, moving from your feet upwards and always stroking towards your heart.
5. Detox Your Skin Care
If you are going to take the time to implement these detox practices to release toxins, you don’t want to be putting dangerous chemicals back into your body through your skin care products. Our skin is our largest organ. Anything we put on our skin, seeps into our body, effecting every other organ. According to the Environmental Working Group, the average woman exposes herself to 168 chemicals a day through her beauty products. Check out our Apothecary line for self care products that are hand crafted from all natural elements that are nourishing and restorative.
6. Add in the Probiotics
Adding probiotics to your diet can make a world of difference. Probiotics help restore the healthy bacteria in your stomach which can maintain your intestines’ natural balance and aid in digestion. You can take a probiotic supplement or incorporate fermented foods or kombucha into your diet.
7. Plant Power
It is always a good idea to add more dark leafy greens, as well as cruciferous greens, into your diet. They are full of antioxidants, essential vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. They also support the liver and aid in the detoxification process.
8. Spice It Up
Spices are a simple, affordable and delicious way to rev up your metabolism, aid in digestion, promote detoxing and add a kick of flavor to any meal. There is a variety of amazing spices to choose from: cinnamon, turmeric, cayenne, cumin, coriander, curry and ginger, to name a few. Start building up a killer spice rack by buying one every time you’re at the grocery store. They last you a long time and really up the ante, health and taste wise, on any food you’re preparing.
9. Get Moving
Our bodies are meant to move. It’s essential to find unique ways to add some kind of movement into your day: gentle stretching, dancing to your favorite song, a few jumping jacks, walking somewhere instead of driving or simply taking the stairs. Incorporate more intense cardio, yoga or strength training into your routine at least 3 times a week. Get that heart rate up and sweat those toxins out.
10. Just Breathe
Deep breaths can be one of the most therapeutic and cleansing things you can do for yourself. Learning to incorporate breathing techniques into your daily routine will help calm the nervous system, reduce stress and promote detoxification. An ease breathing practice to start with is the 4-7-8 technique.
Try adopting one or two of these detox practices into your day. You will notice a shift in your energy, clarity and attitude. Creating a daily detox routine will help eliminate many of the toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis and keep you running clean and mean.
