Holiday festivities and New Year cheers-ing got the best of you? Every bit of indulgence was worth it, but now it’s time to get yourself back on track. 2015 is your year! Time to take your health into your own hands. No idea where to begin? No stress- simply show your body love and respect and everything else will fall into place. Incorporating a smoothie into your daily routine is an effective and realistic goal for 2015. To help you with this, we have a super easy detoxifying green smoothie recipe that will flush out the toxins, cleanse your system and nourish your body.

We like to make our smoothies as simple, nutritious and delicious as possible by using an MJF juice as the base. Our cold-pressed raw juices are tasty, satisfying and packed with the most amazing variety of micro-nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals that nature has to offer. This smoothie is made with The Ditch, our detox drink that hydrates, alkalizes and cleanses your body.When you combine The Ditch with the purifying power of fiber-rich leafy greens, you are left with a smoothie that will leave you feeling replenished, rebalanced and ready to tackle all of your resolutions!

Detox Smoothie

  • 1 16oz. The Ditch (celery, green apple, pineapple, coconut water, lemon, burdock root, dandelion root)
  • 2 cups (1 large bunch) organic leafy greens (spinach, parsley, kale or Swiss chard)
  • 1 frozen organic banana or avocado
  • 1 small handful of ice
  • Chia seeds (optional), to garnish

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Enjoy right away to get the maximum benefits from the nutrients.

*** If your primary focus with green smoothies is cleansing, then it goes without saying that organic fruits and greens should be used for ingredients. You are being counterproductive if you are using fruits and vegetables that have been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides!

Beach Break

At MJF we don’t have work breaks, we have beach breaks- and we aren’t just referring to our delicious and refreshing watermelon, mint, and hibiscus juice (although that is a fan favorite). When we need some time to unwind, we take to the beach. Not only is a walk along the beach awesome for clearing the mind and relaxing but it also has added health benefits!

 

Walking in the sand requires about 2.5 times more energy than walking on hard surfaces. This causes you to burn 20- 50% more calories, without being too hard on your joints and feet due to the natural cushion the sand provides for you.

 

Not only does the sand feel amazing as it massages your soles but it also activates venous and lymphatic circulation. Sand also serves as mother nature’s exfoliant, peeling away dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother and rejuvenated.

 

If you let the waves come up and splash your legs while you’re strolling along the coast, you will be getting the added benefit of soaking up all the minerals that are in salt water that cleanse and  heal the skin.

 

Walking barefoot is thought to ground us and reconnect us with nature, allowing us to de-stress and fill us with good vibes.

Why I Fell For Green Juice and Why You Should Too

love and juice: what it's all about.

 

We are absolutely thrilled and honored to be able to bring green juice to Montauk. It has long been an obsession and a life changer for all of us at MJF. Our energy levels, health and appearance were so significantly changed by the power of green juice… and we loved the convenience of drinking it at anytime. It quickly took over our morning coffee on our way to work and for those sketchy energy drinks when we needed a pre going out pick me up.

Here’s a short list of why I fell head over heels for the juice:

 

1. Green means vitality.

The awesome green color in these vegetables comes from chlorophyll, which is actually like sunshine in a liquid form! Plants harness the sun’s energy in photosynthesis, and we can cash in on all that powerful energy and vitality when we ingest these plants. They are high vibrational and plants make us feel ALIVE! I seriously will feel a nutrient buzz after one of these babies that is like a plant based high.

 

2. My body and diet were seriously lacking. 

We can all use a little nutritional boost- no matter how healthy we eat. I thought by eating mostly plantbased food with grains and seeds that I was doing right by my body. It is a great start but, sadly, most fruit and vegetables are grown in a soil that’s depleted compared to what it used to be years ago, so they don’t contain as many nutrients as they once did. It’s worth adding a concentrated and easily absorbed boost to your day as a true, real food multivitamin supplement. I always feel like it’s a shot of phytonutrients right to your bloodstream.

 

3. My life was stressful and busy and stressful and busy….

Stress and pollution happen to us on a daily (hourly, minutely?) basis. This causes inflammation and literally wears down on our bodies and energy levels. We now need more antioxidants and alkalizing greens than ever. Being on the run and having no energy used to make me want to reach for a coffee or diet soda or an afternoon chocolate bar- all of which used to further zap my energy.  My body was getting depleted and it was a vicious cycle. Too tired to eat well, to tired to work out, grab a quick fix, feel worse. Adding a green juice or smoothie to my day provided me with both that instant pick-me-up and a lasting energized and uplifted effect.

 

4. Green juices are the true breakfast of champions.

I love brunch, I hate breakfast. If you’re someone like me who isn’t particularly found of breakfast or feel like they don’t have time for a “complete and balanced breakfast” a juice or smoothie first thing is an easy go-to. It requires less processing and chewing and sitting and cleaning, yet provides you with plenty of nutrients to start your day off on the right foot. Especially when you can grab and go right from our MJF fridge, there is actually no prep or dishes to clean 🙂

 

5. I want to stick it to the man. The health insurance man. 

Disease prevention is the best form of insurance. There’s no better health insurance than preventing disease in the first place. Do your part to avoid having to pay hefty medical bills later and dealing with the emotional strain by providing your body with plenty of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, berries, avocado and coconut oil. “Pay the money to your farmer now, instead of to a hospital later” is one of our MJF mantras.

 

6. More greens means less room for other bad stuff.

As the truth about the industrialized, processed and factory-farmed meats and dairy products and processed sugars and chemicals and dyes that belong in a horror movie not on a grocery shelf begin to come out, many of us are making a choice to eat less of these foods. Instead, we’re reaching for other nutrient-dense sources of calcium, protein and fat. Greens are one of the best plant sources of calcium, magnesium and iron, and even contain a nice dose of protein. For real! And, greens don’t have to be boring. There are a limitless combination of things you can add to your greens to boost the benefit or the taste. The feeling after you juice is all the proof you need to want to swap out that vending machine snack for a bottle of goodness.

 

7.  I’m always on a quest for optimal health. I wanna live long, feel awesome, and- I’ll be honest- look goooood. 

Humans are living longer and are in constant search of ways to improve our well-being and quality of life. The quest is on for a more natural way of life. We’re a generation fed up with company’s claims for anti-aging, weight loss, quick fix, chemical laden bs solutions that come in forms of man made pills and potions and shots. We are educated and informed and we are truth seekers in search of optimal health, and not ready to settle for anything less. I believe the green drinks boom has happened as a result of this immense motivation to be the best we can be. Fully radiant and operating on all cylinders, just as nature intended.

I’ve Got a Spring Fever Smoothie


Mmm spring is here

 

There’s a balmy breeze in the air and this baby has all the goods to get you feeling great

 

 

1 frozen banana

1 cup of frozen mixed berries (I used strawberries but feel free to use anything!)

1 cup of raw coconut water

1/2 cup of raw, shelled hemp seeds

1 tbsp coconut oil

1 tbsp goji berries

1 tbsp ginger, if you’re feeling sassy

 

Throw in blender until smooth. Drink up.

In the juicing universe cold-pressed is all the rage right now; but some people have been asking us: what does it even mean?

 

Cold-pressed refers to the method of juicing we practice at MJF. The hydraulic juice press minimizes heat production and oxidation by extracting the juice directly from the pulp through an applied force of more than 2000 lbs. There is no heat created so the health properties of the fruits and veggies remain intact. Juice made using the cold-press method typically has 3-5x the amount of nutrients than juice made using a centrifugal juicer so you get all those amazing vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

 

It’s a little bit more labor intensive and a lot more messy than centrifugal juicing- but we take care of all of that so all you have to do is enjoy the great taste and the even greater benefits.

How do I know if I need to detox?

Are you feeling sluggish or out of sync? Struggling with digestive problems, depressed mood, or recurring skin problems? Can’t seem to lose weight? Seasonal allergies bringing you down? Yup, you’re probably ready for a BODY DETOX.   Detoxification is not about dieting or calorie restriction: it’s about resting, cleaning, and nourishing your body from the inside out.

 

How does detoxification work?

The first thing that has to go down is to flush and eliminate toxins. Everyone has them. Even if you generally “live clean”, trust us, toxins can sneak in from a vast number of things including food, lifestyle, household cleaners, personal health care products and the environment. These toxins mess up your whole balance. (Rude.) They need to be removed and this means cleaning the blood and stimulating certain vital organs that aid in detoxification.

 

For example, by removing impurities from the blood in the liver it is like clicking “reset” for your whole body. The liver is where toxins are processed for elimination and, yeah, not-so-coincidentally where all those beers you had at the Sloppy Tuna have to pass through eventually. 

 

Toxins are also eliminated through the kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin so it is important to focus on foods and exercises that pay extra attention to these organs during a detox. Cleansing these organs help ensure that impurities are being properly processed and disposed of efficiently in the body.

 

How do I start a detox?

The cool thing is your body has the most amazing ability to heal itself when given the right fuel. The most important step of a successful detox is to ease up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which are obstacles to your healing process.

 

The main focus is to give your body a break from processed foods, dairy and animal products and focus on eating fruits and vegetables: raw or cooked. By pumping your body with phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants your organs go from performing like Mario to Super Mario.
