“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moment, embark on a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” – John Boswell

Winter is a beautiful season: a time to retreat a little, focus on yourself and explore your depths. However, sometimes the bitterness of the cold and wind can leave you with less than warm feelings towards winter. That’s why you need to cultivate routines that are meaningful, nurturing and help you get the most out of these months of hibernation. Here are some of our favorite winter rituals that warm your body and soul:

Ginger Lemon Tea

Begin your morning with a warm cup of lemon and ginger tea, an ancient Ayurvedic tradition. It stimulates digestion, alkalizes your body, gives you a boost of energy and will help ward off cold and flus.Add some of our organic cold-pressed Good Good lemon and Ginger Ninja ginger boosters to your next order. Drop a half ounce of each into warm water and you have a delicious and immunity-boosting tea that will warm you up from the inside out.

Bentonite Clay and Facial Steams

Treat yourself to an at-home spa experience with one of our newest obsessions, Bentonite Clay. Bentonite Clay is a detoxifying clay that is very unique due to its ability to produce an “electrical charge” when mixed with liquid. The absorbent clay possesses a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins, heavy metals and impurities allowing it to absorb and extract them. You can literally feel your skin pulsate from the charges removing the toxins.

Kick off the pampering session by doing a relaxing facial steam. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils, like eucalyptus, lemongrass or tea tree, to hot (but not boiling) water to unwind and warm up after a long winter day. This will open up your pores, clear your sinuses and relieve any congestion you may have. Relax and breathe in the aromatic steam for about 15 minutes. Then apply your detoxifying mask made up of equal parts Bentonite Clay and water or apple cider vinegar. After 15-20 minutes, wash it off and then it is time for facial steam round two. You will be amazed by how smooth, soft and radiate your skin looks and feels afterwards.

If you really want to soak up the winter vibes, draw a bath and make an evening of it. Light a candle and put on some of your favorite mellow music. Dry brush for 5-10 minutes prior to open up your pores and exfoliate away any rough or dry skin. You can add 1/4 cup of the Bentonite Clay plus a few drops of essential oil to a warm tub to detox and soften your entire body. Dip into this relaxing and rejuvenating bath… and let the worries and the cares of the chilly day melt away.

Give Yourself a Little GLOW (Cleanse)

Dry skin, crackling lips, dull hair- why does winter do this to us? Bring life back into your body, shine back into your hair and warmth back into your skin with our GLOW cleanse. It’s the perfect cold-pressed combination for this time of the year. It not only protects your hair, skin and nails from the elements but it also helps you stay in fighting form through even the harshest of winter weather. Let’s shine this season. Be yourself. Above all: let who you are, what you are, what you believe shine through every sentence you write, every project you finish and every day you live. ‘Tis the season to embrace warmth, share joy and celebrate what makes us each merry and bright.

Stoked on the Season

IMG_2201

It’s that time of year again and we intend on soaking up every last bit of holiday cheer. There will always be one extra thing on your to-do list or one more “mega sale” to shop; but we are here to say drop the expectations of a picture-perfect Martha Stewart holiday and just ride the wonderful wave December brings.

REASONS TO BE STOKED ON THE SEASON:

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

There is something magical about this time of year: the crispness in the air, the twinkling of the lights and the sprinkling of snow around us. Take time outside for fresh oxygen and fun winter adventures such as sledding, skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating. Go for a stroll with a loved one or take your furry friend out for a spontaneous winter wonderland excursion.

HOLIDAY MOVIES

What’s a better way to relax and spend some well-deserved downtime then curled up with a mug of something warm and a few holiday favorites? Feel like a kid again with The Grinch or Home Alone. Throw it back, black and white style, with the classic films It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. Grab a cuddle buddy, some mistletoe and put on Love Actually or The Holiday. And don’t forget to tune in to see if Ralphie shoots his eye out in The Christmas Story.

QUALITY FAMILY TIME

This is the time of  year to put aside the differences, embrace the quirks and simply enjoy each others’ company. Reminisce on the good times, laugh at the ridiculous stories and make new memories for the years to come.

PRESENTS

We all know how the saying goes: “it is better to give than receive.” There is an unmatched sense of joy that comes with finding the perfect gift for someone and then seeing that look on their face when they open it…but, c’mon, getting gifts is pretty awesome too! Appreciate both the spirit of giving and receiving this month- while remembering that the main goal is to spread joy.

FOOD

Go ahead, indulge! When you love your body and nourish it regularly, it can handle a little splurge here and there. At MJF, we are big believers in balance. This isn’t the time to stress over calories and weight- that will only release cortisol into your body and slow your digestion. Simply savor the wonderful family feasts, the holiday cookies and the festive cocktails without any guilt or judgement. We promise we will be here to get you back on track! After all, that’s what New Year’s resolutions are for.

So eat, drink, laugh, love and be merry because it really is the most wonderful time of year!

MJF Yourself: 3 Ways to Help You Find Balance

Surfing. Skateboarding. Skiing. Living. It’s all about balance. Sometimes in the middle of chaos we need to remember how to stay balanced and decipher what is important and what’s not in that moment.
image

1. Be flexible and easy on yourself. We only have 24 hours in the day. Find the 5 things that are most important to you to get done and, if you do them, pat yourself on the back. If you don’t, pat yourself on the back and give yourself a hug. Some stuff is just not going to crossed off the list. Think back to ALL the things you have done in that day, week, month and where you have come from. Take a moment to enjoy a sense of accomplishment and happiness that you are being productive and making progress.

2. Remember “no” is a complete sentence. No one likes saying no but, to achieve balance, you are going to have to whip out the negatory word once in a while and understand that NO EXPLANATION is needed. This is something I struggle with but we cannot possibly do everything that we want to do and that everyone else wants us to do. Protect your priorities, protect your sanity, protect yourself. You cannot be a compass to anyone if you are too overwhelmed to see straight. When requests or needs pop up, ask yourself: what feeling is this going to give me if I accept? It should be happiness and accomplishment. If it won’t: what is the worst case scenario if I say no? Chances are everyone will be okay.

3. Make time for salt water.  Dance hard. Swim long. Run fast. Watch a funny YouTube clip that makes you laugh so hard you CRY.  Sometime the best thing you can do to weather the stormy waters is do a big ol’ cannonball into them and feel the rush of the ocean. Step away from the to do list for a moment: enjoy the live you’ve built and working so hard for. Take a moment to put things into perspective. Life is a balancing act and, with the right mindset, the most epic ride you can imagine.

All Good Things Are Wild And Free

At MJF, we are diehard beach bums. Cold, hot, overcast, pouring rain: there is something renewing and spiritual about being at the beach. Usually because it means you are stopping to enjoy life. Part of MJF life is taking breaks to take it all in.

We spent a day collecting treasures, soaking up the salty air and reveling in the art of doing nothing but enjoying Mother Nature. Yes, please believe, salty air and sand beneath your toes is epic and therapeutic: but, even if you don’t live close to the ocean taking some time to enjoy something that costs nothing is a powerful thing. Feeling the warm breeze on your face, sitting on a park bench, dipping your toes in a pond, stopping to look up from your phone and soak up the sun, or observing the clouds like you’re seeing them for the first time. These are things that ground you and make you take pause and remind you how good it is to simply be alive.

MJF Yourself: De-Stress in 76 Seconds

The Montauk lifestyle represents slowing down and enjoying life and living in the moment- but stress can always creep in. Stress is one of the worst detriments to our health: weight, longevity, organ function, and quality of life are all negatively impacted. .

When I feel myself getting wound up, I use Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4-7-8 breathing practice. It shifts our nervous system away from the sympathetic predominance (which makes us feel that jittery, adrenaline, heart racing stress) and allows the parasympthetic nervous system to take over and keep us calm. Our bodies are equipped with everything we need to feel great. We just need to listen to it.

FROM MINDBODYGREEN, HERE’S HOW YOU DO IT:

  1. Sit up straight in a chair.

  2. Place the tip of your tongue up against the roof of your mouth. Keep it there through the entire breathing process.

  3. Breathe in silently through your nose to the slow count of 4.

  4. Hold your breath to the count of 7.

  5. Exhale through your mouth to the count of 8, making a slight audible sound.

  6. Repeat the 4-7-8 cycle another three times, for a total of four breathing exercises.

Take a deep breath- breathe in the good, breathe out the bad. Repeat until whatever is bothering you is put into perspective.
