“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moment, embark on a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” – John Boswell

Winter is a beautiful season: a time to retreat a little, focus on yourself and explore your depths. However, sometimes the bitterness of the cold and wind can leave you with less than warm feelings towards winter. That’s why you need to cultivate routines that are meaningful, nurturing and help you get the most out of these months of hibernation. Here are some of our favorite winter rituals that warm your body and soul:

Ginger Lemon Tea

Begin your morning with a warm cup of lemon and ginger tea, an ancient Ayurvedic tradition. It stimulates digestion, alkalizes your body, gives you a boost of energy and will help ward off cold and flus.Add some of our organic cold-pressed Good Good lemon and Ginger Ninja ginger boosters to your next order. Drop a half ounce of each into warm water and you have a delicious and immunity-boosting tea that will warm you up from the inside out.

Bentonite Clay and Facial Steams

Treat yourself to an at-home spa experience with one of our newest obsessions, Bentonite Clay. Bentonite Clay is a detoxifying clay that is very unique due to its ability to produce an “electrical charge” when mixed with liquid. The absorbent clay possesses a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins, heavy metals and impurities allowing it to absorb and extract them. You can literally feel your skin pulsate from the charges removing the toxins.

Kick off the pampering session by doing a relaxing facial steam. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils, like eucalyptus, lemongrass or tea tree, to hot (but not boiling) water to unwind and warm up after a long winter day. This will open up your pores, clear your sinuses and relieve any congestion you may have. Relax and breathe in the aromatic steam for about 15 minutes. Then apply your detoxifying mask made up of equal parts Bentonite Clay and water or apple cider vinegar. After 15-20 minutes, wash it off and then it is time for facial steam round two. You will be amazed by how smooth, soft and radiate your skin looks and feels afterwards.

If you really want to soak up the winter vibes, draw a bath and make an evening of it. Light a candle and put on some of your favorite mellow music. Dry brush for 5-10 minutes prior to open up your pores and exfoliate away any rough or dry skin. You can add 1/4 cup of the Bentonite Clay plus a few drops of essential oil to a warm tub to detox and soften your entire body. Dip into this relaxing and rejuvenating bath… and let the worries and the cares of the chilly day melt away.

Give Yourself a Little GLOW (Cleanse)

Dry skin, crackling lips, dull hair- why does winter do this to us? Bring life back into your body, shine back into your hair and warmth back into your skin with our GLOW cleanse. It’s the perfect cold-pressed combination for this time of the year. It not only protects your hair, skin and nails from the elements but it also helps you stay in fighting form through even the harshest of winter weather. Stoked on the Season

IMG_2201

It’s that time of year again and we intend on soaking up every last bit of holiday cheer. There will always be one extra thing on your to-do list or one more “mega sale” to shop; but we are here to say drop the expectations of a picture-perfect Martha Stewart holiday and just ride the wonderful wave December brings.

REASONS TO BE STOKED ON THE SEASON:

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

There is something magical about this time of year: the crispness in the air, the twinkling of the lights and the sprinkling of snow around us. Take time outside for fresh oxygen and fun winter adventures such as sledding, skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating. Go for a stroll with a loved one or take your furry friend out for a spontaneous winter wonderland excursion.

HOLIDAY MOVIES

What’s a better way to relax and spend some well-deserved downtime then curled up with a mug of something warm and a few holiday favorites? Feel like a kid again with The Grinch or Home Alone. Throw it back, black and white style, with the classic films It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. Grab a cuddle buddy, some mistletoe and put on Love Actually or The Holiday. And don’t forget to tune in to see if Ralphie shoots his eye out in The Christmas Story.

QUALITY FAMILY TIME

This is the time of  year to put aside the differences, embrace the quirks and simply enjoy each others’ company. Reminisce on the good times, laugh at the ridiculous stories and make new memories for the years to come.

PRESENTS

We all know how the saying goes: “it is better to give than receive.” There is an unmatched sense of joy that comes with finding the perfect gift for someone and then seeing that look on their face when they open it…but, c’mon, getting gifts is pretty awesome too! Appreciate both the spirit of giving and receiving this month- while remembering that the main goal is to spread joy.

FOOD

Go ahead, indulge! When you love your body and nourish it regularly, it can handle a little splurge here and there. At MJF, we are big believers in balance. This isn’t the time to stress over calories and weight- that will only release cortisol into your body and slow your digestion. Simply savor the wonderful family feasts, the holiday cookies and the festive cocktails without any guilt or judgement. We promise we will be here to get you back on track! After all, that’s what New Year’s resolutions are for.

So eat, drink, laugh, love and be merry because it really is the most wonderful time of year!

Back to Cool

unnamed-1

Just because Labor day is a faded memory and we can no longer wear white, doesn’t mean that summer is over. Summer isn’t officially over until September 21st, so embrace the summer vibes for one more week!

Enjoy the great outdoors.  Go for nature walk, or if you’re so inclined  a hike. Soak up sun and get your daily dose of vitamin D. Sleep out under the stars. Does it still count as camping if your’e in your back yard- we’ve all agreed it does.

Go for a swim. before the next swim you will be able to go for is the polar bear dive, get yourself into the ocean, your pool,  your neighbor’s pool,  rooftop pool hopping- just take the plunge.

Savor the fresh fruit that will soon go out of season. Seasonal fruit is more flavorful, more affordable, and filled with more of its natural nutritional content. We believe the most righteous fruit is local, fresh, and organic. Check out localharvest.org to find a farmers’ market near you.

Star gaze. The nights are getting a little chillier, so throw on your favorite flannel, grab a blanket or two, find someone to cuddle up with, and admire the beauty of the night sky.

Grab some MJF! Just because the season is over doesn’t mean the juices have stopped flowing. Actually the opposite. Our Montauk location is staying open, but we will also be extending our reach. Cleanses and deliveries are available,  pop-ups are popping, and awesome new products and merchandise will be rolling out! So be on the look out.

Natural Beauty Products

Fortunately, natural beauty is real trendy right now. I feel like there are more and more dye free products and fewer flat irons being sold everyday.  It’s a wonderful thing.. especially when you’re kinda lazy like me or if you think you look like a clown when you wear both eyeliner and lipsticks at the same time… also like me.  But now the all natural beauty product pool is absolutely flooded.  Going into a Sephora or even my local drugstore can be overwhelming. I can never tell what’s real and what’s pretending to be.  As a result I rarely try anything new.  Most of my beauty routine involves products that my mother used before I was even born.  She passed these things on to me as a child and I still use them to this day.  I think the test of time is what really proves a product… you know?

Dr. Bronner Soap

They started making this stuff in 1858.  Yeah, it’s sold at American Apparel right now but this soap is super old school.  It lasts forever and has a million purposes aside from just body wash (I’m pretty sure you can’t wash your dishes or your baby with that bottle of Pantene you’ve got in your bathroom… but with this you totally can).  The peppermint scented is awesome for summer time because it makes your skin super cool and tingly.  The best part is reading the kooky religious propaganda on the label while you shower.  Seriously good read

Tiger Balm
Developed in 1909 it’s the perfect remedy for sore muscles or the day after you sleep funny and can’t move your neck.

Bag Balm
This company opened it’s doors in 1899 making a product that’s perfect for feet, elbows, and knees.  It’s quite the callus aide.  It was originally used by farmers to soften cow utters.  Weird, right?

Aveda Volumizing tonic
Aveda started in 1978.  Okay that’s not the most impressive establishment date… but I’m really into their products.  This volumizing tonic is really great for wavy hair.  Gives it that cool piecey beachy look without being sticky and gross.

Smith’s Rosebud Salve
Rosebud Perfume Co. started making this all purpose salve in 1892.  Use it as lip balm, moisturizer, or rub a bit behind your ears and on your wrists and wear it as perfume.  It’s smells exactly like a flower.

Coconut Oil
Seems to be everybody’s favorite thing ever these days and for good reason.  I don’t really use lotion.  When my skin needs some serious attention I cover myself head to toe in coconut oil before I get in the shower and wait around for a minute.  I wash it off and it leaves my skin very smooth and glowing.  I also use it after I’ve been in the sun to avoid pealing.  I don’t know anything else that leaves your skin with that particular shiny look… I’m really into it.

Vitamin E Oil
Great for healing scars and treating severely dry skin.  I use it on my lips in the winter when they’re super chapped.

Lemon Juice
I remember when I was younger I’d spray Sun-In in my hair before heading out to the beach or pool and after just a few days of that my hair would look exactly like a bowl of curly cheese doodles.  If you’re like me and want to aide the sun’s process of lightening your hair in the summer but are looking for a color a bit more natural than “Velveeta,” just use lemon juice.  Run the juice of one lemon through your hair with your fingers before a day in the sun and you’ll notice results most likely that evening.  Make sure to hit your hair with a moisturizer/conditioner afterwards because the acidity of citrus tends to dry things out.

I know this is painfully corny but in all honesty, you’re absolutely gorgeous just the way you are.  Beauty products shouldn’t create an illusion.. they should enhance what you were born with.  You were given a beautiful body… use these lovely trusted potions to help you take good care of it.

MJF Inspiration: Word

Quit your job- or just search to find one that doesn’t feel like one.

Buy a ticket- or escape from the norm on a budget… go to a cafe or part of your own city you never visit. Explore.

Fall in love– yes, with yourself. And the miracles that surround you. And people around you. Every damn day.

Never return. To a mediocre way of living. Find beauty and joy and enthusiasm everywhere.

At MJF, we are diehard beach bums. Cold, hot, overcast, pouring rain: there is something renewing and spiritual about being at the beach. Usually because it means you are stopping to enjoy life. Part of MJF life is taking breaks to take it all in.

We spent a day collecting treasures, soaking up the salty air and reveling in the art of doing nothing but enjoying Mother Nature. Yes, please believe, salty air and sand beneath your toes is epic and therapeutic: but, even if you don’t live close to the ocean taking some time to enjoy something that costs nothing is a powerful thing. Feeling the warm breeze on your face, sitting on a park bench, dipping your toes in a pond, stopping to look up from your phone and soak up the sun, or observing the clouds like you’re seeing them for the first time. These are things that ground you and make you take pause and remind you how good it is to simply be alive.
